AMBLESIDE Ladies recorded two high-scoring Cumbria League victories at the weekend, beating Carlisle (7-3) on Saturday and then following up against Glaxo (7-0) on Sunday.

Against Carlisle at Caldew School, Dalston, there was a lot of neat play from the travelling team, and they could have been three or four up before scoring on 15 minutes .

The breakthrough came when Caley Parnell crossed the ball from the right for Amanda Faulkner to dart front of the keeper to poke the ball in.

Carlisle levelled the scores 10 minutes later when the ball was pushed through a c rowded circle past the partially unsighted goalie.

This just spurred on Ambleside and they added a second from a sweeping move from left to the right. The cross found Louise Hartley who scored.

Youngster Nicola Conway then scored twice, the first when she received the ball just in the circle, drew the keeper and flicked the ball past her.

For her second, she received the ball close to the goal-line following a penalty corner and reverse-flicked the ball into the net.

Leading 4-1 at half time, Ambleside scored three more. Amanda Faulkner converted a penalty flick and completed her hat-trick after Conway touched the ball on with a fierce shot into the top corner of the net.

Conway's hat-trick came with a fine individual goal, but Ambleside relaxed and lost central defender Ruth Finley with a hand injury as Carlisle scored twice to reduce the deficit to 7-3.

Ambleside fielded a mixture of young and experienced players against Glaxo on Sunday and it worked as Ambleside were always on top, although it took a while for them to open their account.

Then midway through the half Amanda Faulkner received the ball just outside the circle and, drew the keeper off her line and fired home.

Ruth Finley bagged the second following a penalty corner with a strike from the edge of the circle. The ball hit a defender's stick and looped inro the net.

Lauren Wright scored a third. She collected the ball on the right, ran it into the circle and went wide before a reverse-stick flick put the ball past the advancing keeper.

Leading 3-0 at half time, Ambleside continued to enjoy the majority of the attacks. Kelly Williams did a lot of running at centre forward and came close to scoring on a number of occasions.

Four goals followed in the second half, the first from Wright when Conway dribbled past a couple of defenders at the top of the circle then passed to her near the post for her to push the ball home.

Next it was the turn of Conway when she struck a firm shot from the edge of the circle. Shortly afterwards, Wright was on hand again to push the ball past the goalie to complete her hat trick.

The final goal came from a short corner. Wright sent across the ball, which was then neatly passed between players before finding its way back to Wright for her fourth goal.

It finished as a 7-0 win to Ambleside, but could have been greater but for some fine work by Karena Rushton in the Glaxo net n Kendal Ladies' fixture against Wigton on Sunday was cancelled because a young Wigton team did not have drivers to get them to the match, It gave Kendal four points and three goals, but the side are disappointed not to have played since December 17.

n AMBLESIDE had three matches in the second of the four-week U14 Mixed League The all-girl team lost 2-0 to Windermere's mixed team but showed promise.

Against Wigton, there was a very close game with both teams having attacking play but the end result was 0-0.

Growing in confidence, Ambleside went ahead against Glaxo with a Hannah Rigg goal. In the second half Glaxo levelled the score and it stayed 1-1.

Northern.......................1 Kirkby Stephen............1 KIRKBY Stephen Ladies' first team maintained their mid table position in the North West Feeder League with a 1-1 draw at Northern, and still have two games in hand due to postponed matches.

The first half featured some fast breaks by the Northern attack, but they could not break down a well-organised Kirkby defence in a scoreless first half.

Lack of recent match play, showed in Kirkby's second-half display, as they found themselves constantly defending.

Kirkby struggled to distribute and switch play in the midfield and, following good pressure, conceded a well-taken short corner which was converted, giving the Kirkby keeper little chance.

Kirkby responded well and the virtues of quick ball out of defence was shown as they broke and were rewarded with a goal from striker Ruth Stickings to earn the draw.
