CUMBRIA League leaders Wigton Ladies, arrived to play Kendal Ladies expecting victory, but their opponents produced the best performance of the season for a surprise 3-2 victory.

With three victories under their belt, Kendal adopted a positive game-plan despite an extremely physical contest.

From the outset Kendal took the game to the visitors, aware that Wigton would punish lapses in concentration.

Superb passing and team work enabled the home team to take the lead within the first 15 minutes when Sarah Brooks beat the keeper with a cleanly-struck shot.

Wigton pulled a goal back after finding a rare gap in the defence, but Kendal were still very much in the running with a 1-1 half-time scoreline.

Kendal again frustrated the visitors with a good start to the second-half.

A scintillating run from Kirsty Ormrod left the Wigton keeper stranded and beaten as she scored Kendal’s second in style, Having lost Ashley Coulson due to an injury in the first half, Kendal’s defence had to work extra hard, with some of the side playing out of position.

Yet Kendal’s determination led to a third goal when Trudy Luttrell’s shot was helped in by Andrea Elvey at the back post.

Wigton scored a second in the final 10 minutes, but could not beat keeper Holly Price again and there were strong performances at the back from Nicola Martindale and Sarah Dent.

n Ulverston Ladies were away in the Cumbria League and a feast of goals resulted before Windermere Ladies ran out 4-3 winners.

Windermere settled quickly with Alison Jeffrey initiating many of their attacks from defence. Debutant Ashley Moore made her mark with some excellent passing and their first goal came after a fine cross from Carol Quill found Helen Telford who slammed the ball into the net.

Windermere’s second followed soon after when Sarah Whitehead followed up Jane Jackson’s initial shot to slot the ball between the keeper’s legs.

Windermere’s third goal came from Alison Jeffrey, who thundered the ball from the top of the D into the back of the net.

Ulverston picked themselves up and Rachel Smith struck the ball into the D for Lyn Fitzwilliam to score at the back post to make it 3-1 at half time.

In the second half, Ulverston, with Leanne Dullard outstanding in central defence, disrupted the home side and Charlotte Regan struck for their second goal.

Ulverston levelled the scores when a square ball from Jacqui Riley found Vicky Weeks in midfield and she linked with Paula Eddy on the left wing. Eddy dodged a couple of players to find Fitzwilliam who turned and fired in.

Windermere who had the last word from a short corner in the dying seconds. The initial hit was drilled back across the face of the goal, where Helen Telford scooped the ball into the net to secure the spoils.

Last week Windermere played beat Ambleside 1-0 with the vital goal coming from Carol Quill. It was a game of contrasting halves, but Windermere took their chance after delivering most of the second-half pressure.
