LAKELAND’S Adam Bartlett and Hannah Cleary-Hughes and Barrow’s Sarah Jones are Northern Orienteering Champions in their M14, W14 and W16 age classes.

Former Kendalian Charlie Adams, now of South Yorkshire Orienteers, is M45 Champion. They achieved their success at Ray Demesne, near Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland in an area of heather moor with crag and boulder features and wooded plantations.

Course lengths ranged up to the longest at 13.9km for the M21 class.

Lakeland men gaining top ten positions in the championship classes were Thomas Edmonds second M12; Carl Edmonds second and Matthew Penellum sixth M18; Todd Oates third M21; Nick Howlett tenth M40, Dick Towler sixth M60; Tony Richardson third and Steve Burge seventh M65 and John Bettinson sixth M70.

Others highly placed in the women’s classes were Lois Jefferson fourth W14; Barrow sisters Laura Jones fourth W18 and Cerys fifth W20; Rebekah Beadle third and Jo Cleary sixth W45; Pauline Richardson eighth W55; Janet Nash second, Diana McClure sixth and Ann Smith tenth W60.

A Sprint event was held on the previous day in the Newcastle urban parkland setting of Leazes Park and the adjacent surrounds of St James Park football stadium.

Todd Oates was fastest Lakeland member over the 2.5km Men’s course in 14 minutes taking tenth place just ahead of Carl Edmonds 11th.

In the 2.1km Women’s course, Sarah Jones was sixth in 13 minutes.
