Blackpool paralympian Shelly Woods has been forced to hand back her silver medal after a day of high drama in Bejing.

The 22-year-old finished second in the T54 5,000m race but officials have ordered that the race be re-run on Friday after a chaotic last few metres in which six athletes fell.

Shelly manourved her way through the group to deservedly scoop the silver behind Canada's Diane Roy.

But just minutes after the race, the International Paralympic Committee announced that the result was void following appeals from the USA, Switzerland and Australia.

Great Britain and Canada say that they in turn could appeal the decision to hold a re-run.

A ParalympicsGB spokesperson told the BBC: "We are reviewing the decision and hope for an outcome before the end of today."
