LOCALS took advantage of a home fixture near Grange to produce some good results with most runners competing in their age classes at a regional standard event.

Courses ranged over the fast open grassland on Hampsfell and the intricate contour detail of Eggerslack Woods, with limestone pavement adding a physical challenge.

Warrior OC's Liz Campbell and Andy Hyslop won the Women's 21 Long and Men's 45 Long courses.

Lakeland OC had leading senior placings in Karen Farley second W45L, Judy Burge fourth W50L, Helen Neild third W60L, Iain Smith-Ward third M40L, Richard Wilson fourth M45L, Jonathan Lagoe third M50L, Steve Buckley fourth M60L and Bob Stewardson second M75L.

Leading junior placings were LOC's Katie Wright third in Junior Women 3 and Kelly Raymond third JW4, Sean Penellum (BARRO) third in JM2 and Michael Bragg third on the JM5 Long, the same course as run by some of the senior men.

Other notable performances were achieved across the classes. For the senior women, BARRO's Alex Earley was second on a short W21 course, Rachel Turner second W40S, Rebekah Beadle fifth W45L, Jackie Chapman sixth W50L, Janet Nash eighth W55L, Anne Jago tenth W60L, Margaret Buckley and Angela Towler first and second on W60S (all LOC).

In the senior men, Warrior's Brendan Bolland was third M21L, Alistair Bramwell third M40S and David Binks second M60S, Lakeland's Tim Field eighth M40S, Graham Farley eighth M45S, Wray Brocklebank tenth M50S, Tony Richardson ninth M60L and Sid Smith ninth M65L. BARRO's Mick Waplington was sixth M45S.

For the girls, Chloe Bell (LOC) was sixth JW2, Sarah Jones (BARRO) fifth and Natalie Beadle (LOC) sixth JW3, In JW4 Jessica Courtman (LOC) was fifth, Carrie Beadle (LOC) seventh , Laura Jones(BARRO) eighth and Kim Little (LOC) tenth. Jessica Myers (LOC) was fourth JW5 Short. LOC's Jemma Bell, Jenny Hubbard and Alison Fryer were sixth, seventh and tenth in JW5 Long over the same course as run by some of the senior women.

For the Lakeland boys, Patrick and William Rigg were eighth and ninth JM3; Max O'Hara and Nathan Metcalfe seventh and eighth JM4; Tom Lawson, Steven Bragg and Robert Browne fifth, seventh and eighth JM5L; Philip Metcalfe, Jack Wright and Joe Bragg third, sixth and ninth JM5M. Lakeland boys took first and second in JM5S through Tom Adams and Jack Filmore, ahead of BARRO's Jonathan Austin third and Max Waplington fifth with Chris Marshall (LOC) sixth.

On the previous day some Lakeland members attended an event in a Spring series of short courses in Skelghyll Woods at Ambleside.

Judy Burge won the Women's Open ahead of Rachel Turner in third. Richard Lecky-Thompson was second in the Men's Open.

On the Men 40+ course, Iain Smith-Ward was second, Nick Howlett fourth, Pat McIver ninth, Malcolm Campbell (WAROC) 12th, Martin Powell 14th, Greg Foot 20th and Steve Burge 21st. Liz Campbell (WAROC) was second on the Women's 40+ course just ahead of Lakeland's Jackie Chapman third and Janet Nash fourth.

There will be an opportunity for newcomers to try orienteering at a special Come-and-try-it event in Cartmel Woods on Saturday April 26th.
