Blackpool Wyre & Fylde Athletic Club's men's and ladies teams retained both of the Mid Lancs Track and Field League trophies for 2007 which were presented to them at the end of season Medal Meeting at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan at the weekend.

The club's athletes won a total of 27 medals comprising five gold, six silver and 16 bronze at the meeting. Victoria Hospital ward sister, Gail Ellershaw, was the only senior winner, signalling her recovery from injury with an emphatic win in the 1500m in a time of 5 mins 05.0 secs, a clear ten metres ahead of runner-up Melissa Burbeck representing Lancaster and Morecambe AC.

Field event specialist, Tom Baran, however, was the most successful local athlete, striking gold for the under 15 boys in the discus with a throw of 24.51m. and the hammer throw event with 34.15m while Jamie Thomson also won gold in the under 15 boys javelin competition with a throw of 19.86m.

The club's young sprint sensation, Sophie Riley, was the only other winner,taking the under 13 girls 100m in a time of 13.5 secs ahead of Rachel McMorrow of Bolton United Harriers (13.6 secs).

However, McMorrow turned the tables on Sophie in the 200m where she took the gold medal in 28.3 secs with Sophie having to be satisfied with silver in 29.1 secs.

In the most thrilling race of the afternoon, Jack Scarr missed the gold medal by a whisker, in the under 15 boys 800m with a time of 2 mins. 17.4 secs just one tenth of a second behind Jai Vernon-McGuigan of Southport Waterloo AC.

Meanwhile, Katie Wyper won two silver medals in the under 15 girls sprint events behind Lancashire sprint champion, Sophie Ealand of Preston. Katy was timed at 12.9 secs.in the 100m against Ealand's 12.7 secs. and 27.3 secs.in the 200m. against 27.0 secs.

In the under 13 boys age category, Ben Everson took silver in the 800m. in 2 mins. 31.0 secs; Oliver Hopkins,silver in the long jump with a leap of 4.24m. and Chloe Needham,the shot putt with a throw of 8.40m.

Simon Wells won a well deserved bronze medal in the senior mens 100m. sprint in a time of 11.7 secs. whilst Shane Ellershaw complemented the gold medal won by his wife Gail, with bronze in the senior mens hammer with a throw of 34.13m.

The club's ladies veteran champion,Carolyn Robbins, who is quickly regaining fitness after a health scare, had a solid run in the 1500m where she won bronze in a time of 5 mins 15.2 secs.

Other bronze medallists at Wigan were Darrel Constantine in the under 17 men's triple jump with 10.33m; Katie Wood in the under 17 women's hammer with a throw of 12.67m; Jack Scarr in the under 15 boys 400m. with 60.7 secs; Joe Gigli, in the 1500m.with 4 mins.56.6 secs; Megan Healey in the 300m. with 45.0 secs. and Matthew Walker who took bronze in the under 13 boys' high jump with a clearance of 1.20m.
