KENDAL Town boss Lee Ashcroft promised the club’s supporters that the team would give of their very best in the remaining matches despite the quest for a play-off place looking out of reach.

Town’s up-and-down form continued as they followed a 5-2 defeat at Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat at Frickley Athletic on Tuesday evening.

But Ashcroft maintained it was important for the team to finish by turning on the style even if the promotion dream has vanished.

Town sit 11th in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, eight points behind the play-off places, but with sides above them having games in hand, and with just five games to go, Ashcroft is turning his attention to next season.

He said: “I always expected us to be in the play-off hunt but we have had a hard season.

“There have been changes at the club this season and I believe our squad is as good now as any I have had at the club.

“We will be working hard in the summer so we can fight for promotion next season, but I can guarantee that in our remaining games we will be trying our best to win.

“We want to win every game we play and who knows where we will finish, but we want to finish as high up the league as possible.”

Town fans may be frustrated with this season after two successive play-off appearances, but the signs are encouraging with pacy winger Danny Williams, 22, signed from Clitheroe, looking like a star of the future along with new striker Gary McEvatt and defender Adam Sumner.

Meanwhile Town said a fond farewell to keeper David Newnes, who has been a great servant, on Tuesday night.

The Parkside club believed they had signed a new keeper in Josh Mimms, but he is now poised to go to play abroad in Norway.

Loyal Tom Newton looks set to step into the frame for Saturday’s game against Whitby Town at the Lakeland Radio Stadium.

Town will then travel to Worksop Town on Monday night (7.45pm kick-off)
