A BIG fortnight lies ahead for Milnthorpe Corinthians who take on Lytham in the semi-finals of the West Lancashire League’s Challenge Cup on Saturday.

Seven days later Cors face Westmorland League First Division 1 leaders Kirkoswald in the Westmorland FA Senior Cup final.

Cors face Lytham, just deposed as long-time leaders in the WLL Second Division, at the neutral venue of Norcross and Warbreck (3.20pm kick-off), Cors boss Keith Singleton said: “It’s an important fortnight ahead that will make or break the season for us.

“Nobody wants to miss out on reaching a final and though it will tough against Lytham, we can call upon a full-strength squad and are confident of giving a good account.”

Cors warmed up with a third consecutive win, a workmanlike 2-1 victory over bottom of the table Ladybridge in the league on Saturday.

Two goals in as many minutes after quarter of an hour put Cors in command.

Stef Postlethwaite fastened on to a ball in the box and turned and hooked into the net.

Cors second goal came from Dan O’Conner who got the benefit of the doubt when his shot-or-cross flew into the top corner.

It was not a briliant first-half display and Cors created plenty of opportunities to make it more comfortable but could not convert them.

Ambleside United were on fire against Whinney Hill with a 9-0 demolition.

Mike Barron hit a five-timer with a Zach Clark hat-trick and a Tom Routledge goal accounting for the goal glut.

Clark’s three goals came in the first half as Ambleside led 6-0 at the break and he is now the leading scorer in all five divisions of the West Lancs League with 31 to his name.

Ambleside boss Steve Edmondson said: “It’s was the best performance of the season so far. It’s good that we have keep going and not let the season drop away because it’s important to finish as high as we can and above Kendal County!”

The pick of the goals were Clark’s cracking volley from a Martin Grundy free kick, while Barron’s header from a Sam Benson cross was a fitting final effort.

Young Benson and Jake Routledge had good games as midfield substitutes, with Phil Gavin, back from Australia, also given a 45-minute return to action.
