THE Rothay Bowling League begins its 50th season next week.

Formed in 1961 largely due to the efforts of Wilf Nicholson, then president of Ambleside Bowling Club, the founding four clubs are now 14 from an ar the four founding clubs were Ambleside, Coniston, Langdale and Staveley, joined the following year by Hawkshead.

Now the league consists of 14 clubs, from an area bounded by the River Crake to the west and the River Kent to the east, with 24 teams in two divisions.

Remarkably throughout its 50 years, the league has only had two chairmen – Jack Johnson of Staveley and Sue Todd of Coniston – and two treasurers – John Fishwick of Staveley and Jeff Harris of Ambleside.

The anniversary season will be marked by an additional mixed pairs competition, with two pairs being invited from each club, and an end of season dinner with presentation of awards.

A 40-page illustrated booklet, chronicling the major events of the league’s 50 years, has been produced, and is available from Erline Robinson (015395 33272) price £2.50 (plus 50p if required by post).
