KENDAL Town Reserves' hopes of securing a trophy early on in the season were dashed when Wetheriggs United, the current Westmorland League champions, beat them 2-1 in the Invitation Trophy final at Parkside on Wednesday.
Kendal dominated the attacking exchanges in a goalless first half, with Town's ex first-team boss Peter Smith, who is still a regular for the club in the UniBond League side, proving a handful for the visitors' defence.
Smith teed up fellow forward Steve Cross to volley in eight minutes into the second half But Wetheriggs hit back with two goals in four minutes going into the last quarter of an hour.
Andy Robertshaw's looping header from free kick putting them level and then Andy Fell pressurised Lee McNeill to turn a low cross into his own goal soon afterwards.
Town pressed forward in numbers but struggled to create a clear-cut opening and keeper Danny Roberts made two fine saves to stop them from falling further behind.
