LAKELAND Orienteering Club's first Galoppen of the year took place at Newton Fell on Sunday. The bright weather attracted an exceptionally large turn-out of almost 400 competitors of all ages, unperturbed by the strong cold winds.

The courses were well planned, including areas of open fell with intricate rock features and small areas of scrubby woodland and excellent views across the Lyth Valley towards the Howgills.

Kate Farley won the short yellow course in very fast time (6 minutes 44 seconds), while Ed Nash on the 8k Brown course was over ten minutes ahead of his nearest competitor (58 minutes 8 seconds)
