LADY bodybuilder Helen Thwaites, 26, has carried off the Miss WABBA (World Amateur Body-building Association) GB Open Championships title and qualified for the Universe 2003 Champion-ships to be held in Germany later this month.

Miss Thwaites, from Vicarage Park in Kendal who works as a receptionist at Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon Ltd, competes in the trained figure category and started bodybuilding in 1999 after being a gymnast in her youth.

Last year she was Miss European and World Tall Figure and she also won the Miss WABBA GB title in 2001, was Miss North West in the same year and is a three-times winner of the Miss Cumbria title.

She trains at Furness Health Stadios under the guidance of former Mr Universe Bill Hensworth and team-leader Joe Walker, with a dedicated routine designed to sculpt and shape the body with various gymnasium equipment, while her performances incorporate flicks and splits from her gymnast days.
