*Shireshead..........139-6
Burneside.... ........132-5 BURNESIDE finished with a losing draw in a game they could have, and probably should have, won. In retrospect they began the run-chase in earnest five overs too late and they finished agonisingly in sight of the target.Inserted by Burneside skipper Steve Cooper on a damp wicket, Shireshead's progress reflected the heavy ground as Chris Dixon bowled accurately to take 2-27 from 18 overs.Several batsmen struggled to come to terms with the conditions before Ray Riley (35) broke the shackles before Phil Oliver (26 not out) and Mike Park (17) ensured that the final 11 overs were more profitable than the preceding 34. Remarkably Shireshead's total of 139-6 proved to be the highest of the day in Division One.Burneside began circumspectly with 34 from 18 overs, before Cooper (22) was stumped off Shah. Park ran out Matthew Oates with a direct hit, and Craig Caswell (14) played on to leave the score at 41-3 in the 22nd over. From then the innings stagnated, reaching 48 after 30 overs and 68 after 36. David Batty (36) survived a difficult chance and Gary Baker (27) a less difficult one. Suddenly, both batsmen hit straight sixes in one over and the chase was on. The 72 needed from nine overs became 37 from five.Phil Oliver's re-introduction brought the wicket of Batty, but Chris Dixon (26 not out) kept the charge going. Another Park throw, this time from the deep, saw off Baker, and Tallon top-edged into his nose, forcing his retirement. Burneside still needed 16 from the last over and, with the fielders massed on the boundary, a good game was drawn.Windermere........70
*Arnside...76-5WINDERMERE lost the toss and found themselves batting first on a green track. Runs were hard to come by and wickets fell regularly to some accurate bowling from Mike Brockbank (5-14) and Chris Howsley (3-22). Only Liam Price (12) stayed for long, although Steven Carruthers (18) struck some defiant blows towards the end of the innings as the visitors slumped to 70 all out. After tea Nick Lewthwaite and Jonathan Cooper struck early to remove the Richardson brothers, but Andy Lee (25no) and Ian Bullough (26) saw Arnside home with plenty of time to spare at 76-5.Milnthorpe................105
*Sedgwick.............107-7SEDGWICK may have recorded a three-wicket win, but it was far from an easy task as both sides were in deep trouble early in their innings.Milnthorpe found the bowling of George Willacy (5-18) hot to handle and were struggling at 15-3 before Mike Wills steadied the ship with a knock of 33.The target of 105 did not look unduly arduous for Sedgwick, but they too faltered and were reduced to 40-4 before a stand between Nick Dalzell (41 not out) and his brother Jason put the home side back on track.A swift 13 not out from Mike Gaunt then helped Sedgwick to a winning 107-7.*Bolton-le-Sands..102-8
Westgate...............105-1WESTGATE cruised to a nine-wicket victory against a Sands side that is finding life tough in the top division. As ever it was Peter Wilson (2-15) and Danny Wilkinson (3-12) who opening the bowling and they never let Sands get going, reducing them to 25-5 in the 19th over. Tim Millatt led the resistance with four boundaries in his 27 and Robert Clarkson added 17, but the run-rate stuttered along at two an over and it took a couple of big hitsfrom Graeme Beaumont (20no) for Sands to top the 100 mark as 19 runs came from the final over.Adam Dyson struck an early bow in Westgate's reply but Roger Hill (20no) and Peter Wilson (68no) take advantage of some loose bowling from the other end shoddy fielding. Wilson hit four sixes, mostly from half-trackers, and also played some crisp drives to reach his half-century in double quick time. The target was knocked off in the 19th over, a timely victory as the rain started.*Heysham.................128
Warton.................133- 5 WARTON skipper Neil Jones backed his bowlers on winnign the toss and Darren Nelson and James Rafferty and they had the hosts at 30-4. Two more cheap Heysham wickets made it a perilous 45-6, but Finney (27) launched a mini recovery that ended when he chopped on in the 31st over to Nelson (5-30), who took his third consecutive "five for". From 80-7, the last pair Taylor (17) and Sharples (7) added a valuable 25 to take the total to 128.In defence of their small score Heysham began full of energy and after Finney (4-26) bowled Osmotherly, he took the prized scalp of Bovis off a lifter edged to gully with the score on 19. When Ricky Nelson (22) was bowled and Darren Nelson spooned an off- drive to cover, the visitors were suddenly 52-4. Warton found a solid partnership at last in Jones (50no) and Batson (22), who dug in and added 40 in 12 overs. One more wicket fell, but with 37 still required Jones settled Warton nerves with some lovely timing and completed a captain's knock with a six to bring victory. *Kirkby Lonsdale.......93
Ibis..............................61IBIS won the toss on a green ,damp Lunesdale Park wicket and the decision to bowl seemed right when Kirkby were 5-2 from eight overs. But, not for the first time, Steve Williams (33) dug in and aided by Swindlehurst and Mills, Kirkby started the board moving. The Ibis attack kept chipping away and Dave Johnson (3-23) was well supported by Huggonson, Robinson and Swindlehurst and Kirkby were reduced to 67-6.Late bravado from Derek Williams (13) ensured a few runs, but 93 all out was disappointing. Kirkby regrouped during tea with the aim of a positive performance in the field. The team obliged as they set about the Ibis batting line-up. Former Ibis player Darren Troughton was the scourge of his former team-mates, taking 6-8 from 15 overs in an accurate spell.Even so, Ibis steadied the ship through skipper Mike Robinson (24) and at 57-4 looked favourites. The introduction of young spinner Andy Metcalfe (4-17) changed the game again as he took three victims in one over and Ibis lost their last six wickets for four runs.Earlier, an amazing catch behind square from Eddie Mills earlier had sent back the dangerous Coulston to the pavilion, in what was a very workmanlike team effort from Kirkby in securing an unlikely 15 points.* Denotes home teamsCUP MATCHESHackney and Leigh First Division TrophyBolton-le-Sands...179-7
Warton......................143WARTON fielded two sides on Sunday for in addition to the first round of the Hackney and Leigh, they also had to compete a National Village Knockout game.Sands batted first and Ireland (82) and White (10) shared 47 for the first wicket. Ireland hit five sixes and nine fours in Sands' first half-century of the season. Crowther (2-30) and Mosey (3-30) pegged back the scoring the last few overs, but Jon White (22no) gained useful runs to take the total to 143.Crowther (37) and Jones (31) set about the target confidently for Warton for with an opening stand of 52 inside eight over. Jones hit three sixes off Dyson before a fuller ball clipped off-stump. Darren Nelson soon followed in the same manner and Danny Dixon ran out Batson with a superb pick-up and throw. Warton were still up with the required run rate and, with ten overs left, needed 73 with five wickets in hand. Crucially Crowther was run out and by now the predicted rain had begun. With the ball a bar of soap and the pitch turning to mud, Robinson was another run-out as batsmen struggled for footing. In the end the run rate proved too great and the fourth run-out of the innings ended the contest in the 22nd over. Cartmel......................58
Shireshead..............61-0SHIRESHEAD eased into the second round with an easy victory against a weak Cartmel side on Sunday. Only veteran Eddie Sharp (12) and colt Woodburn (11) made double figures in Cartmel's innings - wides contributed 15. Gareth Westworth (3-10) sent the first three batsmen back and there was also an encouraging spell from young pace bowler David Jack (1-7). On a rare outing for the first team, Sunil Cherukuri was too good for the tail, taking 4-9. Shireshead's greatest concern was the gathering clouds. Mike Park (17no) and Phil Oliver (42no from 17 balls) finished the game inside five overs.*Kirkby Lonsdale..156-5
Ingleton.....................55ON A dreary day, Kirkby hosted local rivals Ingleton and took first knock on a wet wicket. An opening stand of 77 from Derek Gibson (23) and Darren Troughton (62) set the stall out and a powerful 43 from James Dixon ensured a decent 156-5 from 25 overs.Ingleton lost a wicket off the first ball of the reply and the spinners, operating first up from both ends, had the visitors at 47-2 from 10 overs. The double change of Colin Johnson (2-2) and Troughton (5-4) ripped apart the Ingleton batting as eight wickets fell for eight runs and they were dismissed for 55.n ADAM Richardson made 55 as Arnside scored 187-8 while Sedgwick's Chris Mason took 4-46, but the rain descended and the match will be replayed this Sunday.Other rained off matches due to be replayed this weekend are: Westgate v Milnthorpe; Trimpell v Burneside and Windermere v Ibis. The Galgate v Silverdale replay has not yet been arranged.Village KnockoutBURNESIDE went to Salesbury, near Blackburn, and played a 30-overs a side game despite the pouring rain. Salesbury made 123-8 off 30 overs and Burneside knocked them off at 126-7 with an over to spare. Batty was the main contributor with 45 and a third-round tie with Shireshead now awaits. In the South Lancs/G Manchester section, Warton beat White Coppice by 10 wickets, knocking off a target of 112.
