MARATHON running returns to Windermere after 20 years as the day of the Brathay Windermere Marathon arrives on Sunday (10am start).

The organisers, the Brathay Hall Trust, opens its doors as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, with plenty of attractions for spectators and supporters as 1,400 runners do the hard graft on the road.

Visitors will be able to try a new canopy walk, climbing wall and canoes and whale boats during the day. A circus troupe and two live bands will entertain with refreshments available.

All the effort, including the "Ten in Ten Challenge is to raise funds for Brathay's charitable work.

Sir Chris Ball, 72, who thought up the Challenge said: "I'm interested in the idea that people can do much more than they usually imagine, so the Brathay Challenge is to show what ordinary people are capable of. Ordinary people can live extraordinary lives, this is what we want to demonstrate."
