YOUNG gymnasts met their idol on Tuesday when world champion Beth Tweddle spoke to a packed hall at the Lakes School assembly then travelled to Lakes Leisure, Kendal, to see children from 52 schools display their gymnastic prowess.

World champion Tweddle, who was third in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award and won the similar North West award was in South Lakeland at the invitation of South Lakes School Partnership.

Her speech at Troutbeck Bridge was designed to inspire youngsters to make good use of facilities at the Lakes School and Sports College.

Partnership development manager Mark Stokes said the visit of Britain's outstanding competitor would: "have a huge impact in inspiring young people to participate in gymnastics from now until the 2012 Olympics."
