A Poulton musician is preparing to undertake the challenge of a lifetime in an emotional tribute to his late mother.

Martin Scragg, 43, (pictured) is aiming to climb Mount Kilimanjaro next February to raise nearly £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The trek, which lasts for seven days, starts in lush tropical rainforest before going up through moorland and scree to the permanent glaciers and ice-fields at the summit at 5,896m.

Martin's mother Joan, 73, died from a brain tumour last year.

He said: "After mum's death, I decided I wanted to do something in her memory.

"The Macmillan nurses were in close contact with her from the moment she was diagnosed.

"I was impressed not only by the professional care they provided but the way they worked effectively with everyone involved in her treatment."

Martin is a civil servant in Thornton and an active musician in the Fylde area, playing the trombone for Thornton Cleveleys Brass Band.

The band is performing at a charity family concert to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support tomorrow at Singleton Parish Church, Church Road, Singleton at 7.30 pm.
