Terrified tram passengers feared they were being shot at when two windows were shattered as it passed through Fleetwood yesterday.

The incident happened at around 11.30am as the 11.08am tram from Fleetwood Ferry to Blackpool service passed Broadwater Avenue, close to the grounds of Cardinal Allen High School.

A passenger on board at the time said: “As we passed the woods after Broadwater stop, the was a tremendous double-crash, and both windows at the front of the tram to the left and right were shattered by what seemed like a bullet.

“The tram came to a screeching halt and the floor was showered in broken glass.”

He added that during the incident he was in fear for his life.

Police were called to the scene at 11.50am after the conductor led a party of around 10 passengers to safety.

A police spokesman, said: “The missile which broke the windows came from a wooded area to the right of the tracks.

“We have not yet established what type of object caused the damage but investigations are continuing.”

There were no reported injuries in the incident.
