A Wyre councillor faces censure after posting ‘offensive and discriminatory’ comments about a fellow councillor on his personal website.

Labour’s Ian Duffy, who represents Mount ward in Fleetwood was reported to the standards committee of the authority after a complaint by councillor Marlene Colby about his alleged conduct.

Her complaint concerned the content of Coun Duffy’s website, which she claimed was personally offensive to her.

An investigation was launched which concluded that the councillor should remove the comments, make a written apology and attended training sessions on member conduct.

However, Jan Finch, monitoring officer for the authority says in a standards committee report that although the material has been removed, ‘he has indicated to me that he will not apologise either directly or indirectly’ and ‘he is not prepared to attend a one to one training session with me’.

The standards committee is meeting today to investigate the matter and to discuss whether the actions taken by the officer were effective.

Councillor Colby, who represents Rossall ward caused controversy last year when she switched allegiances from Labour to the Tories.

She said: “I can take criticism of a political nature and have a thick skin where that is concerned, but some of these comments were grossly personal and caused offence to me and upset several members of my family.

“I felt I had to complain as personal attacks of this nature are unacceptable.”

Councillor Duffy said the remarks on his website ‘were accurate quotes said by someone else at a meeting’.

He added that he had removed the comments but he would not be apologising.

A spokesman for Wyre Borough Council said that the meeting today would investigate the allegations and that a way forward on the issue would be sought.
