THE canoeist who died after being recovered from Ullswater, yesterday, has been formally identified.

Samuel John Yarwood, 22, from Poole, Dorset, was recovered from Ullswater Lake at 9am, after reports someone had capsized in the water.

Police, mountain rescue teams, the coastguard, RAF and air ambulance launched a search.

Mr Yarwood was recovered from the Lake, between Glenridding and Watermillock, and was taken to Carlisle Hospital by air ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

Police officers are treating his death as a tragic accident after he and a friend fell into the water while canoeing.

Mr Yarwood’s friend, a 20 year old man from Dorset, managed to get out of the water to call for help. He was taken to Penrith hospital for a check up but has since been discharged.

Mr Yarwood’s family have been informed, along with the coroner. An inquest will open in due course.
