SIR, The Cumbrian film and video production company, Direct Image Productions Ltd, is proposing to make a documentary programme - The Boats of Windermere' - based on the lake's unique boating history.

It is envisaged that within a framework of intensely local history, the programme will focus on the story of the many different boats used on Windermere over the centuries; their design type, specific purpose and unique qualities. The story will be told through pictures, archaeological and historical records, literature, folk tales and real memories. We also hope to feature many of the personalities associated with the boats today.

Due to time and visual constraints the programme will concentrate on specific periods in the lake's history: very early boats providing access to the heart of the lakes - Vikings and Romans; industrial heritage - the golden age of steam / the advent of tourism; present day use and future opportunities. In addition there will be reference to specific types of craft,

eg: the Short Sunderland flying boats made during the WW2, speed-week, the SBAGB Rally.

I am conducting initial research for the proposed programme and need as much help as can be offered, specifically to identify sources of facts, figures and interesting stories - as well as identifying picture and photographic resources for illustration. I would be pleased to hear from any of your many readers who may have relevant stories to tell, photos, or amateur film footage.
