A FAMILY-run independent school has cause for celebration after receiving "a fantastic" Ofsted report as it starts its golden jubilee year.

Holme Park School in New Hutton, near Kendal, has been commended by the Department of Education and Skills for its "strong commitment to the welfare of pupils" whose attainment was found to be "often above average" and behaviour "very good".

A report following an inspector's visit to the school last November, found a positive rapport between pupils and teachers, and enthusiasm to learning, while the teaching was good.

It was also found that pupils received "a good start" in the nursery and reception class, which was effectively built upon through Key Stage 1. There was also a strong emphasis on development of knowledge and skills in English, maths and science.

The information technology suite was considered a useful addition, although the development of pupils' IT skills was not as good as could be expected.

Vivienne Curry, director of Holme Park School, which was established in 1953, said: "This is a fantastic report from the department we're all very pleased. My family and the staff who work here have always known what a difference this school makes to the lives of the children who come here it is gratifying to have it recognised officially.

"We will be celebrating our golden jubilee this summer with a party this report is the icing on the cake."
