A LAST-minute change of venue was made for the Cumbria County Cross Country Championships to a new course at Park View School in Barrow.

A cold, sunny day eased the ground and made this undulating course very muddy in places.

With a very busy winter cross-country programme of fixtures still to come few athletes turned out, but those who made the effort were rewarded.

Birmingham-based Kendal athlete Gemma Phillips made time to travel home to run and easily won the senior women's title.

Her next race will be the Northern Cross-Country Championships at Manchester were she hopes for a top-three finish.

Heather Goodman was the only other Kendal woman and finished ninth and fourth vet.

U20 Danny Parkinson, running with the senior men but over one lap less, ran well to finish second.

Kendal U11 Tom Doyle also ran a fine race to finish eighth and U17 Chris Doyle, though competing with an injury, still managed to finish fourth.
