DRINK driving figures released by Cumbria police show that the number of drivers involved in road accidents and testing positive for alcohol was up on last year. Police carried out 168 breath tests at the scene of accidents and 11 drivers tested positive, refused or failed the test compared to eight drivers during the same period December 18 to January 2 last year. There was also an increase in the number of collisions resulting in injury, 73 compared to the previous year's figure of 68, while the total number of breath tests that police took following a collision was down from 207 to 168. During the whole period, 24 of the 482 drivers tested for excess alcohol were arrested. Sergeant David Erskine, of the Northern Traffic Unit, said: "Although the number of people testing positive at collisions was higher than in the previous year, the percentage of those failing from all those tested was relatively low."
