DRIVERS faced major delays on Tuesday night following three accidents within half an hour on the notorious A590 trunk road

The accidents happened near Newby Bridge at teatime and caused long tailbacks. Police said the accidents might have been caused by the icy conditions.

During the first accident at 5pm, involving three cars, a Millom woman was taken to Furness General Hospital suffering head injuries.

A hospital spokeswoman said following treatment, the woman was discharged.

A Ford Fiesta, driven by a 22-year-old woman from Dalton-in-Furness, and a Fiat Punto, driven by a 36-year-old man from Lancaster, were also involved in the crash. They escaped uninjured.

Firefighters were called to the scene but the drivers freed themselves before they arrived. The accident completely blocked the road until 6.45pm.

The second accident happened only yards awards at 5.25pm and involved a Vauxhall Corsa, driven by a 24-year-old Kendal woman, and a Range Rover Freelander, driven by a 21-year-old woman from Longsleddale, near Staveley. The Kendal woman suffered minor injuries. She was taken to hospital but later released.

Police said the long tailbacks from the first collision might have caused the third accident. At 5.30pm a Vauxhall Cavalier, driven by a 29-year-old Barrow man, collided with a Mercedes, driven by a 60-year-old Barrow man, which was stuck in the tailbacks. Both escaped uninjured.

Police did not release names of those involved as they asked not to be identified.
