CUMBRIA Constabulary is considering a 20 per cent rise in its share of the council tax. The rise would cost a band D homeowner £121 annually up £20 on last year. In a meeting of the Cumbria Police Authority yesterday (Thursday), Chief Constable Michael Baxter said the force must raise taxes or withdraw resources from the front line. A 20 per cent rise is enough to cover inflation and unavoidable costs like bigger pension payments. But a £6.5 million wish list of policing improvements has been whittled down to £444,000. The force hopes to persuade Government to give it more cash along with 13 other shire forces. The final police tax rise will be set on February 15.
