PEOPLE wishing to oppose a war on Iraq will have the opportunity to sign a petition this weekend in Kendal town centre.

Kendal couple John and Jean Coopey are organising the anti-war petition, at the Birdcage, with the support of Hans and Margaret Sanders of Friends of the Earth, and Kendal's Professor Philip Edwards and his wife Sheila.

The anti-war campaigners will be at the Birdcage from around 10am on Saturday (January 18) and the petition will afterwards be sent to Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Drawing attention to the petition will be a version of a famous First World War poster, with the slogan Your Country Needs You replaced with the words Sign Up Now Against Iraq War.
