LIFE-SIZE models of two shepherds used in a church nativity scene in Dalton-in-Furness have been decapitated by vandals.

It is the second time in only three years that the nativity scene at St Mary's Parish Church has been targeted. Two years ago the three wise men were vandalised.

The Rev Allan Mitchell said the nativity scene had been set up in the ground of the church so passers-by could see it, but next year it might have to be moved to make it more secure.

Mr Mitchell found the decapitated shepherds on Monday, January 6. One had been left lying in the manger and the other kicked over the wall.

"They were fine when I last saw them on Sunday so the vandals must have struck at night. It looks like their heads have been used as footballs. Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph were untouched but maybe that was a conscious thing.

"It has really marred a very good Christmas as all the church events were well attended and a lot of people in the town were saying what a nice time it had been. I just don't know what kind of fun people get out of doing that kind of thing," said Mr Mitchell.

The church has managed to salvage the bodies of the shepherds.

"They were worth about £50 but it is not the cost of them it is the value of the time and effort put in by the men and woman who made them.

"Next year we will have to think again and may have to move them or make them with fibre glass."

Police in Dalton are appealing for any witnesses to come forward with information. Dalton police can be contacted on 01229-824532.
