THERE was good news for Westmorland football when it was revealed that South Lakeland District Council is considering providing two additional pitches on land adjacent to the Jubilee Playing fields in Kendal.
The land would accommodate two full-size pitches or many mini soccer pitches.
The existing four pitches on the site are currently used by more than 20 teams and are in poor conditions and receive little maintenance, says Peter Ducksbury, executive officer of the Westmorland County FA.
He explained: "The provision of the extra pitches would ease the workload and allow essential drainage, levelling and maintenance to be carried out to existing pitches.
"Additional pitches would also help in the association's development work in providing new playing opportunities for girls, boys, men and women in the small-sided and eleven-a-side game.
The Westmorland FA expects SLDC to seek financial support for the scheme by making a grant application to the Football Foundation.
All matches in the Westmorland league and county cup competitions were called off at the weekend because of frozen pitches.
Several games in the Westmorland Senior and Junior Cup and Benevolent Trophy have been rescheuled for tomorrow. See fixtures box on page 20.
