ONE of Lancashire's leading agricultural show events has appointed a new figurehead to take over a popular family day out.

Rodney Swarbrick, CBE, of Longridge, Preston, has taken over as president of the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society.

He succeeds to the post from Lord Waddington, who presided over the 2002 event, which boasted an increased attendance.

Mr Swarbrick, who has managed family farms and is former Countryside Commissioner and National President of the Country Landowners' Association, was pleased by the appointment.

He said: "I am delighted to have been invited to be this year's President of the Society as the Royal Lancashire Show is an important celebration of countryside and rural life."

The society, whose membership covers the old Palatine borders of Lancashire stretching from Barrow and Kirkby Lonsdale in the north to Manchester and Liverpool in the south, is already gearing up for this year's event at a new venue.

The 700 competitive class spectacular takes place from July 29 to July 31 at Salesbury Hall Farm, Ribchester. For more information call 01254 813769 or www.rlas.co.uk.
