MOTORISTS are to be banned from making dangerous turns on the A590 near to the Brettargh Holt roundabout in a £30,000 bid to cut accident rates.

Local traffic regulations have been changed to make it an offence to turn right across traffic from side roads or to do a U-turn in any central reservation gap on the dual carriageway between the roundabout and Low Newton.

The Highways Agency began its three-week project to implement the prohibitions by putting up new road signs and closing central reservation gaps near to Sizergh Castle and the Heaves Hotel on Monday (February 10).

"We always maintain a careful watch on the safety records of our roads and in this area we saw that there was scope for improvement," said Highways Agency project manager Peter Hamer.

There have been seven accidents one fatal - on the trunk road near to Levens in the last three years, including three that were a direct result of vehicles leaving side roads.

Vehicles will still be able to turn right to Levens, Witherslack and the Lyth Valley.
