APPLEBY Chamber of Trade is working to spruce up the town.

The Appleby Chamber of Trade has made two applications for funding to improve the look of the town, and has had great success following the launch of their Appleby Smarter project.

President of Appleby Chamber of Trade Carl Bendelow said: "Litter has been identified as a real problem everywhere and as a Chamber of Trade we are pushing for the clear up as a smart town is what visitors and locals like."

"We have put in a bid to the Percy Fawcett Trust, a local fund administered by Eden District Council on behalf of the Town Council, for money to hire someone to litter pick the town when the regular street cleaner is on holiday. Our street cleaner is top rate and it soon shows when he takes his rest days."

"We have also made a bid to the Freda Scott Trust for a small amount of money to finance some maintenance work in the town. But while we are waiting for the big scheme, we are getting on with the small tasks with the Appleby

Smarter project using money from the Chamber's funds. The Chamber of Trade is employing Appleby Training and Heritage Centre to carry out some repairs and restoration in the town now. Carl comments that such tasks are an ideal training opportunity for the

young people at the Training and Heritage Centre",

As part of the Appleby Smarter project, the Chamber has arranged funding from Appleby Town Council and the county council's Rural Development Project to have the historic High and Low Crosses painted.

Anyone wanting to contribute to the Appleby Smarter fund can do so through the Chamber of Trade at the Appleby Business Centre in Bridge Street, Appleby.
