MORE than 200 architects across the world reckon they have come up with THE project which will put Morecambe back on the international map.

That is how many firms have expressed an interest in putting in plans for the redevelopment of the key' central promenade area of the resort.

The land around the Midland Hotel is the subject of an international competition being organised by RIBA, the Royal Institute of British Architects, for hotel owners Urban Splash.

And with just under a week to go until the closing date for entries, it has attracted architects from far and wide.

More than 200 architects locally, nationally and internationally have come up with blueprints for the area next to the famous art deco hotel.

The brief for competition is to produce a framework for the development of the whole area and a spokesman for Urban Splash told the Citizen this week that the number of enquiries was encouraging'.

"It is a great sign that architects all over the world are interested in this site and in the future of Morecambe," she says.

The deadline for entries is November 8 and judging will begin on November 21.
