Lancaster City 1 Vauxhall Motors 0

FROM the smallest seed can rise the largest acorn, or so the saying sort of goes.

And it may just be true down at the Giant Axe as Phil Wilson's quiet revolution took another step towards the promised land on Saturday.

Let's get this straight, with a tiny squad and tight budget City should be struggling in a league the national press are now suggesting will be won by Gazza.

Okay, the new Kettering boss had plenty of headlines on Saturday - but the sheer class of one of Wilson's young guns deserves equal billing.

Alex Taylor was released by Burnley in the summer. They reckoned he probably wouldn't make a footballer - and now the 19-year-old seems to be on a mission to make the Clarets pay.

Snapped up by Wilson, Taylor (pictured) has been the brightest of City's shining stars as the Dolly Blues continue to con-found the critics.

And on Saturday he topped the scale with the goal to beat Vauxhall Motors. This was no two-inch tap in. This was special with a capital S'.

After 42 blood and thunder minutes, Taylor collected Stuart Howson's pass on the right and cut inside with a superb turn of pace.

Any number of passes could have followed but instead the young gun went for it - and his 30-yarder was a treat as it zipped into the net via an upright. Talk about top class!

In fact, it was a rare moment of class in a game where acorns could almost be another talking point as some of the Vauxhall tackling was just nuts.

They were brutal at times, especially James Olsen, Steve McNulty and Thomas Rooney.

Rooney is the cousin of Wayne and you can tell. He moans and groans and whines at every opportunity.

But he can play a but as well and City keeper Tony McMillan saved breathtak-ingly from his point blank effort with the score at 0-0.

That was a top save, while his follow-up stop to keep the rebound out was something else as well.

City, who have been fluent in recent weeks, never quite reached the heights but always looked capable of winning, even as their goal took a battering after the break.

Ex-Lancaster man Brian Moogan curled a free-kick wide and was also off target with a 20-yarder, while the dangerous Peter Cumisky thought he had levelled the game when his header looped over McMillan.

But as Vauxhall started to celebrate an equaliser, the excellent Howson was on hand to head to safety off the line.

City could have made the game safe when Dave Shaw and Ryan-Zico Black combined to set up Taylor.

But this time the young striker failed to hit the net as Tim Dittmer smothered his shot to prevent him making it seven for the season.
