n Licensing laws in England have remained largely unchanged since 1915 when restrictive opening times were introduced to stop drunken workers hindering the country's efforts in World War I.
n Current Government estimates suggest that between one and two per cent of licensees will apply for a 24-hour license.
n Penalties for breaching a licence condition carry a maximum £20,000 fine, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
n There will be increased penalties for those who sell alcohol to a person who is drunk and for members of the public to attempt to buy alcohol for someone who is drunk.
n Applicants for licences will be subject to a police check for the first time and could lose a licence if they are convicted of a "relevant" offence such as theft or trafficking stolen goods.
