KIRKBY Stephen Town Council is trying to breathe new life into its market by considering changing the day it is held.

Town clerk Heb Lumley conducted an informal survey and asked different traders if they would object to a change, for example to a Friday, from the current Monday market day. Most were positive about any change and one was quite happy but some already had commitments at other markets on a Friday. Mr Lumley said the traders agreed "without hesitation that something needed to be done" about the waning market interest. However, he added that small town markets were not as popular as they used to be. The possibility of a Sunday market was also aired.
