EDEN District Council is to look at providing more transit sites to accommodate travellers who arrive early for the annual Appleby New Fair.

Last year members of the authority's environment committee decided to look at the possibility of setting up temporary stopping places for travellers to reduce problems caused by unauthorised encampments.

This was carried out on a trial basis for the 2003 fair by using land in Ravenstonedale and North Stainmore and the experiment proved successful.

A report to be discussed by the Director of Technical Services, Steve Huddart, at an environment committee meeting tomorrow, Thursday (November 11) seeks approval for a set level of funding to be made available each year in order to ensure a reasonable budget is available.

In his report Mr Huddart said: "There is no doubt that a few problem families' cause problems for the majority of law-abiding travellers and this minority disproportionately affects the perception of the travelling community."
