PUPILS from Kirkby Stephen Primary School helped launch a countywide campaign "Use your loaf think road safety".

Cumbria County Council and family baker Warburtons have joined forces in a new road safety campaign. Chairman of the council's local committee for Eden Gary Strong, and Dave Graham from Warburtons, presented reception class children at Kirkby Stephen with road safety role play packs, supplied by the baker. And the school's own school crosser Ruth Varty was there to help launch the initative. Warburtons have supplied 30 primary school reception classes across the county with the packs which contain school crossing patrol uniform, school crossing patrol lollipop', stop sign and a zebra crossing.

County Coun Strong said: "One of Cumbria County Council's priorities is to improve the safety and quality of people's lives, particularly on the roads. Last year over 300 children were injured on Cumbria's roads and we want to make sure that this figure is reduced. I would like to thank Warburtons for supplying these packs. They will help these children to understand how to use the road safely. It's a fun way of getting an important message across."

Dave Graham, who is based at Warburtons depot in Carlisle, said: "Health and safety are very important at both work and school and through the use your loaf' campaign we hope to make young children aware of the importance of school crossing patrols."

The use your loaf' presentations were held to mark Road Safety Week which began on Monday and runs until next Sunday. The week is organised by the road safety charity Brake which aims to prevent road crashes through education.
