SOUTH Lakeland District Council has been awarded a grant of £54,250 to improve its staff's abilities.

In September 2003, the Audit Commission rated SLDC as weak, which made the council eligible for grants from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Three of the council's senior officers are currently suspended as an investigation into a £1 million shortfall continues.

SLDC's cabinet heard the authority had been given £25,000 for "management development and leadership", £20,000 to review "the council's human resources function" and £9,250 for a "programme of culture change".

Mike Jones, acting chief executive, said: "They would not give us that money if they were not satisfied with the direction we are going. This is good news."

However, bid leader Graham Essex-Crosby, interim corporate director, said he had hoped for more.
