I AM astonished at the contents of the letter from G R Yates, who lives in Morecambe but, despite choosing to live in a seaside resort, wants none of the events and festivals associated with people having a good time.

I thought that local people would welcome anything that helps to stimulate the economy and put Morecambe on the map for positive reasons instead of the all too frequent adverse publicity that shows decline and depression.

I also have pets that are frightened by fireworks and I know we have many older people who do not like the noise but it is all about balance we know that the noise will stop before midnight.

It was also so sad to see live music, some of it provided by local talent, insulted in such an ill-considered manner. Talent, particularly when it encourages young people to participate in something like music which brings people of all ages together, is to be celebrated not denigrated.

Can I suggest that G R Yates moves to an isolated field in Cumbria where peace and quiet will be readily available - but perhaps not much in the way of real everyday life.

Julia Reay, Morecambe.
