CUMBRIA Safety Cameras has launched the latest in a series of road safety leaflets which aims to make young drivers aware of some of the dangers that await them after passing their driving tests.

The Got A Car 2 Die 4 leaflet is being distributed to fifth and sixth formers in the county's schools, it will be part of the Cumbria fire brigade road safety demonstrations at senior schools in Cumbria, and has been sent to driving instructors in the county.

Communications manager for the safety camera partnership Kevin Tea said: "Statistics surrounding young drivers who have thrown away the L Plates are worrying.

"A 17-year-old male is seven times more likely to be involved in an accident than any other age group, and one in three males between 17 and 20 have an accident in the first two years after passing their test.

"Inexperience causes young drivers to overestimate their ability to control their vehicles at excessive or inappropriate speeds and when finding themselves in trouble, they lack the skill to recover."

The CD-ROM highlights five areas of concern HGVs, pedestrians, motorcyclists, fatigue and young drivers. Mr Tea said the CD-ROM was a convenient way of getting multiple messages across a wide variety of audiences and will be distributed to all schools in the county, driving instructors, haulage companies and partner organisations.
