A MAN has been charged with the murder of Clare Sabear Benson-Jowry whose body was found in a flat on Austwick Road, on Lancaster's Ryelands Estate weeks after she went missing.

Paul Andrew Culshaw, 37, of no fixed abode, appeared before Lancaster Magistrates last Friday (July 23).

It is alleged that he killed 23-year-old Ms Benson-Jowry between June 20 and July 15, 2004, in Lancaster.

Culshaw who appeared in the dock of courtroom one spoke only to confirm his name. No plea was entered and no application was made for bail.

He was remanded in custody, and his case was adjourned until tomorrow (Friday) July 30, for a preliminary hearing.

Miss Benson-Jowry's grieving family issued a statement this week, saying they accepted that a man had been arrested and charged in connection with her death.

"But this in no way compensates for our loss. The family wishes to be left alone to be able to come to terms with the events of the past week."
