ROGUE car boot traders are to be the target of a special operation this summer.

Police and trading standards officials will be visiting car boot sales in a bid to stop unregistered dealers passing themselves off as car booters.

The aim is to cut down on the number of traders who are breaking licensing laws, people who pass on stolen property and anyone who is breaking copyright laws by selling pirate' DVDs and CDs.

Sgt Nigel Ralphson says: "The County of Lancashire Act 1984 requires all second-hand goods dealers in the county to be registered with the council on behalf of the police.

"The act is primarily concerned with dealers who buy and sell second-hand goods on a regular basis and is not concerned with members of the public who clear out their belongs once or twice a year.

"Anyone found flouting these laws will be dealt with firmly by police or trading standards depending on the offence committed.'' He adds: "It must be stressed that individuals who use car boot sales to clear unwanted items a couple of times a year will not be affected.'' Anyone with any concerns about the issue is asked to contact police on 01524-63333 or call the county's trading standards department on 01772- 533573.
