A 22-YEAR-OLD man from Heysham sustained serious spinal injuries when the car he was travelling in collided with trees.

The man, who is being treated at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, was a front seat passenger in the Mini Cooper when the accident happened in the early hours of Saturday.

His condition was described as comfortable' on Wednesday.

Another passenger, Mark William Nelson - a 20-year-old from Old Hutton, near Kendal - was killed.

The car was the only vehicle involved and was extensively damaged when it left the road. It had been travelling south on the A6 Scotland Road near Carnforth, close to the junction with the A601M at about 3am.

Police say the driver, who is 19 years old and from Endmoor, near Kendal, was arrested at the scene. He has been released on bail pending enquiries.
