THE historic Settle-Carlisle train line is celebrating 30 years of strong links with walkers this summer.

An extensive series of fully guided free walks, open to all, are being run from June to September.

The links between the Ramblers Association and the train line began in 1974, when a group of walkers charted a train and persuaded British Rail to temporarily reopen closed stations on the line.

This set the precedent for a three-year experiment which proved a success in bringing diverse groups of rail users together and improved rail services for all.

This year, to join a walk you simply have to buy a train ticket and alight at the relevant station, however, if the walk's leader judges you to be too unfit or inadequately clothed, you may be turned away.

Strong footwear, warm outdoor clothing and waterproofs are all essential. Food and drink should be carried.
