MOUNTAINEER Sir Chris Bonington will be scaling new heights when he takes up his role as Lancaster University's chancellor.
Having conquered Everest four times, including one expedition at the age of 50, he is now looking to his next challenge - following in the footsteps of HRH Princess Alexandra.
Sir Chris, CBE, was the firm favourite for the post when the University's Court met to discuss who should take up the helm. His appointment will go to a formal postal ballot later this month.
Probably Britain's best-known mountaineer, Sir Chris was knighted in 1996. He has led and been on 19 Himalayan expeditions, including four to Everest, and has made many first ascents in the Alps and greater ranges of the world.
Lancaster University also awarded him an honorary degree in 1983.
He said he was very happy' to accept the honour of chancellor and pledged to do all he could help and support the university.
