TWENTY-somethings can soon swap Playstations and alcopops for mountains and real ale, thanks to Cumbria's newest ramblers group.

Tired of the bobble-hat and knapsack image of ramblers, outdoor enthusiasts Paul Strzoda and Michaela Gardner, who both work at the Low Wood Hotel, near Ambleside, are setting up a walking club aimed at people in the 20s-30s age group.

The new club is affiliated to the Ramblers Association and is already planning an energetic programme of activities, including twice weekly walks, weekends away and also some more extreme activities such as climbing and scrambling.

The organisers also hope to place more emphasis on the social aspect of rambling that is traditionally seen as a sedate middle-aged pastime.

They have had a good response to their plans to set up the group and are expecting up to 30 people to attend the inaugural meeting at the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, on February 28, at 5pm.

Mr Strzoda described the meeting as "an excellent opportunity to get involved on the ground-floor."
