A NEW council looks set to emerge from the amalgamation of two parish councils on the outskirts of Kendal.

Skelsmergh Parish Council and Scalthwaiterigg Parish Council look set to become joined following the drawing up of a grouping order.

The decision was authorised this week by South Lakeland District Council's general purposes committee. In a report before members, the committee was told that no one stood for election on Scalthwaiterigg Parish Council on May 1 last year.

A re-run on June 19 produced no response and Skelsmergh Parish Council later agreed the two parishes could be combined. SLDC chief executive Phillip Cunliffe told members that a copy of the order would be sent to the parish and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for consultation before proceeding.
