EDEN District Council has bought 1,000 “baby trees” in root trainers that it intends to offer to residents to celebrate National Tree Week.
In order to take advantage of the offer, residents must drop into tourist information centres at Appleby (tel 01768-351177), Glenridding (01768-482414), or Kirkby Stephen (01768-371199) to collect their tree.
A full list of the trees that are available can be found on the website www.eden.gov.uk or by phoning one of the tourist information centres.
The Tree Council’s National Tree Week is an annual event, which aims to raise awareness of the value of trees and to encourage participation in growing, planting and maintaining trees in local communities.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the ‘Plant a Tree in ‘73’ campaign, which led to the founding of the Tree Council.
Up to one million trees are planted each year as a result of this winter festival.
Coun Mary Herbert, chairman of Eden District Council, will be available to help residents to pick a tree in Kirkby Stephen on Wednesday, November 26, at 10am.
