Roxy Cinema to mark death of Ian Lavender from Dad's Army

The Roxy Cinema, which can be found on Brogden Street, will be hosting a special presentation of the 1971 Dad's Army feature film on Saturday, March 2 at 7.30pm.

The event is designed to mark the passing of Mr Lavender, who played Private Frank Pike in the classic comedy.

Owner Charles Morris said: "We like to do special events at the Roxy - we have our annual Christmas Eve screening of It's A Wonderful Life, of course, and we always put on a Charles Dickens adaptation during the Dickensian Festival. 

"It seems fitting to re-show the film of Dad's Army, now that the last surviving cast member has unfortunately died."

The Birmingham-born actor died on Friday morning, having been ill for some time, with his wife and sons by his side.

He is best known for playing the hapless Pike, who frequently had run-ins with Captain George Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe), famously calling him 'Stupid Boy', and who was looked after by Sergeant Arthur Wilson (John Le Mesurier).

He also acted in other TV comedies such as Yes Minister, Keeping Up Appearances and Goodnight Sweetheart and in a Carry On film.

"We aim to make a big night of it and are inviting patrons to come in period dress, army uniforms or whatever, and of course to bring a gas mask," Mr Morris added.

The feature film appeared during the run of the immensely popular TV series which ran from July 1968 to November 1977.

The team at the Roxy said: "It will be a great night of nostalgia with some war time newsreels, adverts and public information films - and you can do your part by dressing up in period costume.

"What better time to dust off your trilby hat, oxford bags and tank top?"
