REAL fire owners have been warned to sweep their chimneys after fire fighters from Kendal put out a fire in a South Lakeland chimney.

One appliance from Kendal was sent to extinguish a blaze that had developed within a chimney of a house in Milbeck Lane, Natland, at 7pm yesterday.

Fire fighters used thermal imaging cameras and chimney rods with hose reels attached to put out the fire, within two hours of arriving at the scene. The fire was contained within the confines of the chimney and no one was hurt in the incident.

Sandy Holiday, watch manager at Kendal Fire Station, said people needed to make sure they swept their chimney at least once a year to prevent fires from happening.

He said: "Chimneys do need to be swept at least once a year. There was quite a build up of soot and it can catch fire if left to build up."
